Using Biofilteration To Improve Oxygen In Water Quality

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Ways to maintain a good amount of dissolved oxygen in water through using biofiltration. Click here to learn more about biofiltration.

An essential factor to maintain good water quality: Dissolved oxygen (DO)

Dissolved oxygen (DO) Is one of the essential factors in maintaining good water quality. It is a necessary mineral for living bodies to grow and develop. In addition, (DO) is important for the survival of aquatic plants and organisms supports the proliferation of beneficial microbes, and limits the potential for common water quality issues such as nuisance algae, toxic cyanobacteria, bottom muck, and other unfavourable conditions.

Maintaining sufficient oxygen level

One of the biggest challenges in water management is maintaining sufficient oxygen levels. Oxygen levels are declining in waterbodies because of climate change, as global heating increases water temperature which reduces the amount of (DO) found in water. One of the biggest challenges in water management is maintaining sufficient oxygen levels. Fortunately, a variety of solutions are qualified to help correct oxygen deficiencies in water bodies.

Figure 2: Biofiltration

Biofiltration uses a natural system of aquatic plants, rocks, and gravel to cleanse the water of toxic nitrogenous waste. An effective solution to safely filter wastewater to improve oxygen conditions is using a plant-based biofilter, in my study, the most efficient solution would be a biofiltration device which purifies toxic nitrogenous wastes and improves water quality by using bacteria to effectively break down any pollutants that exist in the wastewater. The bacteria that are used in this system are immobilized in filter media before the process occurs, which ensures that they can reach a large surface area. The main purpose of biofiltration is the removal of biodegradable organic carbon.
