Introduction
Aging is a process that happens whether we like it or not and is inevitable for each and every one of us. Even though it is normal to age, why are we so against it? In this article, we are going to dive into the psychological reasons behind our fear of ageing and the effects ageing has on our bodies.
Why are We Afraid of Aging?
We fear aging because we fear becoming undesirable. As we grow older, we start to have wrinkles, frowns and laugh lines. These are straits that are seen as unattractive which may play out to be age discrimination in different situations, e.g workplace.
Moreover, we fear ageing because we fear being sick, or ill. Our immune system deteriorates as we age and develop. This leads to various diseases like heart disease and cancer.
Of course, there are a lot more reasons why we fear ageing and these are just two of the common ones.
Changes that Occur as a Result of Aging
Our cells change with ageing. They become larger and are less able to divide and multiply.
As we grow older the synthesis of RNA also decreases which reduces the cell's ability to divide.
The cell membrane in cells also changes which cause many tissues trouble getting oxygen and nutrients and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.
It becomes difficult for cells to produce energy in our bodies as they age.
Cells become harder to restore balance in the body.
