Why Do People Lie?

The meaning of the word 'lie' is a false statement. Lies are told for one of two reasons: either the deceptive person believes they have more to gain from lying than from telling the truth, or because the deceptive person is incapable of discerning what the truth is. People who repeatedly lie often have a desire to be in control. When the truth of a situation doesn't agree with such a control, they produce a lie that conforms to the narrative they desire. Such people may also worry that they will not be respected if the truth may leave them looking poorly. Liars are often insecure and would lie because of their low self-esteem. They want to impress, please, or tell someone what they think they want to hear.

Pathological Lying - A Type of Lying

Pathological lying is a behaviour pattern in which individuals lie chronically or compulsively. Sometimes, it is to protect the liar from being punished or to protect someone else from punishment. The lie might be told to avoid embarrassment, hide an awkward situation, or simply have others think positively of the liar.

For both kids and adults, the most common motive for telling lies is to avoid punishment. Other typical reasons include protecting ourselves or others from harm, maintaining privacy, and avoiding embarrassment.

Catching Someone Lying

People often avoid eye contact and specific detail when they’re lying. Also, when asking a liar for a detailing story of the truth, their explanation would most likely not make sense or the story would seem disconnected.

Personal Opinion

Lying has such an interesting psychological effect on people. I am very much looking forward to future findings on the science behind lying. I think lying (For your own good or white lie) is natural in humans and everyone must have done it at least once.
